About Us
The Nassau Music Society has offered their Members and the Bahamian
Community the opportunity to listen to good quality classical and jazz music since
the 1960’s. The Society was officially incorporated in 1961 and the first President
was Clement Bethel. Since then the fortunes of the Society have fluctuated over
the years but it has always managed to persevere with successive Committees
providing the impetus to organize concerts. It has been involved in a variety of
different events and for example in recent years opera singers Grace Bumby and
Isobel Buchanan, the London Philharmonic, the English Chamber Orchestra,
Interpreti Venezia, The Boy’s Choir of Harlem, Simon Estes, Yuri Bashmet and the
Moscow Soloists, Natalia Gutman, Dmitri Berlinsky and the Albek Twins have all
performed for us in the Bahamas. Also under the Presidency of Jayne Myles The
Society organised for two consecutive years a Children’s day at Government
House when Al Simmons and others entertained 2000 children for the day. There
have been jazz evenings at the Humidor and other venues. All through this period
the Society has provided funds for Scholarship sometimes on a small scale and
sometimes more generously. At this time the Society is flourishing and we have
put our Scholarship programme on a more solid footing with the help of the Lyford
Cay Foundation. That was our goal for 2007 and we achieved it. This year, the
programme is up and running. Applications for scholarships may be found online
at www.lyfordcayfoundation.com.
Aim of the Society
“To promote and encourage the art of music by organizing concerts and other
musical activities and to provide financial and other assistance to students of
music”
The Society attempts to raise funds pay for the concerts, most of which do not
make a profit and to provide scholarship resources. Surplus funds received from
sponsors, concerts and membership subscriptions go towards scholarship. We
therefore urge you to help us support the students of music in the Bahamas by
attending our concerts and becoming members of the Society. The Society must
maintain sufficient funds for its permanent fund for an annual scholarship. We
also offer assistance to students to help with tuition and purchase of instruments
for bands or orchestras. Please support us as there is a wealth of musical talent
among young students in the Bahamas that need help and the improvement in
their performance over the years has been remarkable.
NASSAU MUSIC SOCIETY – COMMITTEE 2008-2009
“I wish to thank those Members of the Committee who have given so generously
of their time during this and last season. There is a tremendous amount of
organization required to ensure that concerts are successfully run and I thank
you all. ”
